The Lima–Santiago return flight is only 3 hours and 30 minutes — but that journey and the following days at home require specific care depending on the treatment you received. Cabin pressurization, low ambient humidity, and sun exposure through the window can affect recovery if not managed. In this guide we provide concrete recommendations for each procedure, what to bring in carry-on, and how to resume your routine when you arrive in Chile.
If you haven't decided the plan or are reviewing options, complement with the recommended days per procedure, the complete trip guide, and the medical tourism executive summary.
Essential: when NOT to fly yet
For most non-invasive treatments you can fly the next day without issue. But there are exceptions where we recommend waiting:
| Treatment | Minimum wait before flying | Ideal wait |
|---|---|---|
| HydraFacial | Same day | Same day |
| Botulinum toxin | Same day (4-6 h post) | 24 h |
| Hyaluronic acid | 24 h | 48 h |
| Cryolipolysis / EMSbody | 24 h | 24 h |
| HIFU facial / body | 24-48 h | 48 h |
| Diode laser hair removal | 24 h | 24 h |
| Picosecond laser | 48 h | 72 h |
| Morpheus8 facial | 4-5 days | 5-7 days |
| Morpheus8 body | 4-5 days | 5-7 days |
| Fractional CO₂ laser | 7 days | 10 days |
«Minimum wait» is the earliest you can fly without significant risk. «Ideal wait» is what we'd recommend if flexibility allows, for more comfortable recovery and topical products to take effect under optimal conditions (not cabin's low humidity).
What happens in cabin: pressurization, humidity, and sun
Pressurization
A commercial aircraft cabin is pressurized equivalent to approximately 2,000-2,500 m altitude, not sea level. This slightly reduces tissue oxygenation. For common non-invasive treatments, no problem. For recent Morpheus8 or CO₂ laser in acute phase, pressurization can mildly accentuate tightness sensation. Not absolute contraindication — that's why we recommend waiting 4-7 days post these procedures.
Cabin's low humidity
This is the most relevant variable. Relative humidity in cabin drops to 10-20% (vs 50-70% at sea level), dryness equivalent to extreme desert. Post-treatment skin, especially after microneedling, laser, or any barrier-altering procedure, can feel very tight or dry during the flight. Practical management: abundant oral hydration (2 glasses of water per hour), topical moisturizer or thermal water application every 1-2 hours, and avoiding heavy makeup during the flight.
Sun exposure through the window
Aircraft windows filter UVB but not UVA. If your treatment requires strict photoprotection (post-laser, post-Morpheus8, post-picosecond for spots), sit on the side opposite the sun or close the shade. Apply mineral SPF 50+ before boarding and reapply at 2 hours during daytime flights.
Essential post-treatment carry-on
Always carry critical products in carry-on (not checked) in case it's lost or delayed:
- Facial moisturizer recommended by Dr. Geldres for your protocol — container ≤ 100 ml per IATA rules.
- Mineral SPF 50+ (zinc or titanium), not chemical to avoid irritation in reactive skin.
- Thermal water spray (Avène, La Roche-Posay, or Uriage) in container ≤ 100 ml.
- Specific reparative cream if your treatment indicated it (Cicaplast, Bepanthol, Cicalfate).
- Soft pads or cotton to apply products without rubbing.
- Refillable water bottle (empty until past security, fillable after).
- Mild oral anti-inflammatory (paracetamol/acetaminophen) if Dr. Geldres recommended. NOT ibuprofen post-Morpheus8 or energy procedures the first 2-3 days, unless specifically indicated.
- Written treatment summary we provide at visit closing, in case you need to show it to a Chilean doctor.
Specific care by treatment upon return to Chile
Post-HIFU (facial or body)
HIFU activates collagen in depth without altering skin surface. Care:
- No sun exposure restriction; apply SPF 30+ daily as good practice.
- Usual topical hydration.
- No exercise restriction from day 2-3.
- Deep tightness sensation 5-14 days, normal and expected.
- Maximum results at 8-12 weeks.
- Online follow-up at 6-8 weeks.
Post-Morpheus8 (facial or body)
Morpheus8 leaves micro-perforations that re-epithelialize in 2-3 days, but skin remains sensitive longer:
- Mineral SPF 50+ daily mandatory 4-6 weeks, avoid prolonged direct sun. Critical in Chile, where UV is high even in winter.
- Intensive topical hydration with indicated products.
- No heavy makeup the first 5 days.
- No sauna, jacuzzi, steam for 14 days.
- No intense exercise (high sweating) for 7 days.
- Online follow-up at 4 and 8 weeks; second session at 4-6 weeks if your plan includes 3 sessions.
Post-hyaluronic acid
- Maximum inflammation 24-48h, subsides in 4-7 days. Local cold compresses first days.
- Don't rub, don't lie face down, no intense exercise for 24 hours.
- Concealing makeup OK from next day for mild bruises.
- Final filler settling at 7-14 days.
- If you notice asymmetry or irregularity after 3-4 weeks, contact us: hyaluronic acid is reversible with hyaluronidase if needed.
Post-botulinum toxin
- Don't rub area, don't lie down 4 hours, no intense exercise 4-6 hours.
- Effect seen at 7-14 days (already in Chile).
- Mild initial asymmetries are normal and equalize in 1-2 weeks.
- Effect duration: 3-4 months.
- Typical maintenance every 4-6 months.
Post-cryolipolysis / EMSbody
- No operational restrictions. Flight, gym, normal life from next day.
- Small tingling or numbness sensation in treated zone for 2-7 days, normal.
- Visible results at 8-12 weeks.
- Abundant oral hydration (2-3 L/day) to favor natural elimination.
- Aerobic exercise complements treatment; usual routine from day 1.
Post-fractional CO₂ laser
Most demanding treatment. If you flew on recommended schedule (day 7-10 post session), most acute phase has passed. Still:
- Mineral SPF 50+ mandatory 12 weeks minimum; in Chile consider avoiding intense direct Atacama sun longer.
- Intensive topical hydration another 2-3 weeks.
- No heavy makeup 2-3 additional weeks.
- No retinoids, exfoliating acids, or aggressive vitamin C for 4 weeks.
- No exercise generating much sweat for 14 days.
- Online follow-up at 2 and 6 weeks, in-person if second session planned.
Post-picosecond laser
- Mineral SPF 50+ mandatory 4 weeks minimum, ideally 12 if treating melasma.
- Treated spots briefly darken before flaking (days 5-10) — don't scratch or exfoliate.
- Mild topical hydration.
- No retinoids or hydroquinone for 2 weeks.
- No intense exercise for 48-72h.
- Online follow-up at 4 weeks; subsequent sessions every 3-4 months if full plan.
Post-diode laser hair removal
- SPF 50+ on depilated zone 2 weeks if sun-exposed.
- No sauna, steam, jacuzzi for 48 hours.
- Mild erythema 24h, normal.
- Hairs fall between days 7-14.
- Subsequent sessions every 4-8 weeks.
Sun in Chile: context that matters
Chile has high UV levels almost year-round due to latitude and altitude. UV in Santiago, Atacama, La Serena, Viña del Mar, and altiplano is aggressive even in winter. For any treatment requiring post-procedure photoprotection, mineral SPF 50+ applied and reapplied every 2 hours during exposure is mandatory rule, not recommendation.
Specifically consider:
- Atacama and Northern Chile: extreme UV year-round. If planning San Pedro, Iquique, or Valle de la Luna trip post-treatment, wait at least 4 weeks (Morpheus8) or 12 weeks (CO₂).
- Andes and altitude: snow reflects UV. Skiing post energy treatments: wait 4-6 weeks minimum.
- Coast: sea aerosol + intermittent sun, manageable with SPF 50+ and hat.
- Urban Santiago: incidental exposure manageable with daily SPF 50+.
Follow-up from Chile: how we stay in contact
Post-treatment follow-up is integral to service, no additional cost:
- Video follow-up calls: scheduled per protocol (typically 2 weeks, 6 weeks, and 3 months post-treatment). 15-20 min duration each.
- Clinic WhatsApp: same-day response for operational questions.
- Written treatment summary: at visit closing we send PDF with procedure details, products applied (brand, lot), specific recommendations, and follow-up calendar.
- Coordination with Chilean doctor: if your primary doctor or dermatologist in Chile wants to communicate with Dr. Geldres, we facilitate it.
- Next visit: if your plan involves more sessions, we schedule next visit dates with time to organize flights.
When to contact us urgently
Most patients return to Chile uneventfully. But useful to know when to contact the clinic:
- Pain disproportionate to range discussed in consultation.
- Redness extending beyond treated zone after day 3-5.
- Marked heat sensation or skin hot to touch in specific zone after first 48 h.
- Fever > 38°C after any procedure.
- Marked asymmetry post-fillers or toxin after 2-3 weeks.
- Any new reaction (urticaria, breathing difficulty, sudden lip swelling).
Elyzea WhatsApp: +51 907 867 734. We respond during clinic hours (Mon-Sat 13:00-20:00 Lima time) same day. For clinical emergencies in Chile outside those hours, contact your primary doctor or dermatologist and notify us afterwards.
