Fractional CO₂ vs. Erbium: Skin Resurfacing Compared

← Back to Blog

Both fractional CO₂ and erbium are ablative lasers that resurface skin by removing micro-columns of tissue. The wavelength difference is the whole story — CO₂ at 10,600 nm penetrates deep, erbium at 2,940 nm is more superficial. Different depth = different indication.

This guide covers the mechanism, the indication fit, recovery profiles, skin-tone considerations, and how to choose.

Fractional CO₂

Best for: deep acne scars, severe sun damage, periorbital wrinkles, scar revision. Recovery: 7–10 days re-epithelialization. Strong collagen response. Detailed CO₂ guide.

CO₂'s 10,600 nm wavelength is highly absorbed by water and penetrates deep. The result is dramatic resurfacing with longer recovery — but the result is also dramatic.

Erbium

Best for: fine lines, mild sun damage, superficial pigmentation. Recovery: 4–7 days. Less aggressive collagen response than CO₂.

Erbium's 2,940 nm wavelength has even higher water absorption than CO₂ but less depth penetration. The result is gentler resurfacing with shorter recovery.

Skin-tone considerations

Both are riskier on darker skin than non-ablative options. CO₂ has higher post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation risk on Fitzpatrick IV–VI. Pre-treatment with hydroquinone and strict sun avoidance is essential.

Many Latin-skin patients are better served by Morpheus8 or picosecond rejuvenation rather than ablative laser. Why RF is safer.

Cost

LaserUSElyzea
Fractional CO₂ facial rejuvenation$2,000–$5,000~US$714
Fractional CO₂ scars$1,500–$3,500~US$286
Erbium$1,500–$3,000limited availability

Decision

  • Severe scarring or deep wrinkles: CO₂
  • Mild texture issues: erbium or non-ablative
  • Darker skin: consider Morpheus8 or picosecond first
  • Multiple-treatment plan: can combine fractional CO₂ + Morpheus8 over months

Recovery details for CO₂

Day-by-day post-CO₂:

  • Days 1-3: oozing, crusting, significant swelling
  • Days 4-7: peeling, intense redness, sensitivity
  • Days 7-10: redness fades, baseline texture restored
  • Weeks 2-12: ongoing collagen build, results become visible

Strict SPF 50+ for 3-6 months. No sun exposure. Pre-treatment hydroquinone for 4-6 weeks reduces PIH risk.

Combining with other treatments

CO₂ pairs well with:

  • + Morpheus8 (different sessions): deep + textural treatment
  • + HIFU (months apart): resurfacing + lifting
  • + filler: texture + volume restoration

Don't combine CO₂ with same-session aggressive treatments. Recovery requires a clean healing window.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do CO₂ on dark skin?

Caution required. Morpheus8 is generally preferred for Fitzpatrick V-VI.

How long until I see results?

Initial improvement at 4 weeks. Peak result at 3-6 months.

Is CO₂ safe?

When properly performed, yes. The risk is operator error or inappropriate skin-tone selection.

Can I do CO₂ + chemical peel?

Yes, sequenced. CO₂ then chemical peel 8-12 weeks later for layered approach.

What about Halo laser?

Halo is hybrid (ablative + non-ablative wavelengths). Combines benefits with somewhat shorter recovery than full CO₂.

Will I need maintenance?

1-2 CO₂ sessions every 1-2 years for sustained skin quality.

Can I have CO₂ during pregnancy?

No. Postpone until after pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Bottom line

Fractional CO₂ for severe resurfacing in light skin. Erbium for milder resurfacing. For Latin/dark skin, Morpheus8 is often the safer alternative. Lima offers fractional CO₂ at ~50-75% Lima vs US savings.
